I realized today as I was putting this post together, that for a blog that’s barely four months old, Baking Mischief sure does have a lot of tea-party ready recipes. There are my Perfectly Pretty Lemon Bars , my Sherlock Tea Bag Cookies , Victoria Sponge Cupcakes , etc.

Am I subconsciously trying to tell myself something? Am I as an adult trying to create on the blog, the perfect tea party I never had as a child? Who knows?

But guess what. I have another perfect tea party recipe for you today. Big shocker, I know.

These Jam Scones are just about the most adorable things to come out of my kitchen in a while and so tasty. They are my favorite basic buttermilk scone base baked up with the jam of your choice (I’m partial to raspberry) with a buttery vanilla glaze.

They can be served warm and gooey or cooled, with the glaze crunchy and set.

In the oven, the jam cooks down and becomes thick and syrupy and is the perfect complement to the soft, slightly crumbly scone.

I make these whenever I want a dessert that’s a little different and distribute the extras to various friends and family members. After the initial WTF is a jam scone response, they are always a hit.

Who knows, maybe someday, I’ll throw that tea party of five-year-old me’s dreams and serve these Jam Scones (and all those other aforementioned treats) to my guests.

Though to live up to my fantasies, the guest list would have to include at least one Disney princess, a muppet, and Rainbow Brite. So if anyone has any of their contact information, it would be much appreciated…

Fresh green beans with chopped bacon, tossed in bacon drippings make an easy, tasty, and surprisingly low-calorie side dish.

Looking for a tasty veggie side? Well, look no further, because I’ve got a good one for you, my favorite Bacon and Green Beans Side Dish.

A couple months ago, I shared my No-fail Butter and Garlic Green Beans and those have ended up being one of the most popular recipes on the site. These are the same easy peasy deal, but instead of tossing home-cooked green beans in butter and garlic, you cook up a couple slices of bacon and toss the beans in the bacon drippings.

And yes, it is exactly as tasty and easy as it sounds.

These babies come in at under 100 calories a serving, can be made in 15 minutes, and are completely delicious. I could totally eat these every night of the week and never tire of them.

If you have a significant other or a kiddo who doesn’t like to eat their greens, give these a try, it might make a convert out of them!

Ingredients

  • ▢ 1 pound green beans trimmed
  • ▢ 2 slices of bacon cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • ▢ Salt and pepper

Instructions

  • Place green beans in a medium pot and cover with lightly salted cold water. Bring to a simmer. Simmer the green beans over medium low to medium for 5 to 10 minutes until beans reach your desired level of doneness. Drain.
  • While your green beans are cooking, add bacon pieces to a large skillet. Cook until done. If your bacon gets done before your green beans are ready, simply remove pan from heat until they are ready to go. Once green beans are done and drained, add them to the pan of bacon and toss to coat in bacon drippings.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Cap 3 screenings have begun, time to go on the spoiler offensive…

State of the Blog

My Slow Cooker Baked Potatoes With Broccoli and Cheese Sauce were featured in a Redbook round up of slow cooker meals on their site this week. The caption they gave it cracked me up, and if you are looking for some super easy dinners, go check out the fantastic other recipes in that post!

On the blog, I posted one of my most made recipes, homemade panini. Fun fact about that post, I spent a ridiculously long time AGONIZING about whether Baking Mischief was going to be a site that said “panino” or “panini.” I went down a linguistic rabbit hole that included Reddit, cooking sites, Italian and English language forums, and more than one academic paper, hoping someone would just tell me what to do. No one would, so I went with my personal preference, fully aware that I’m probably on the wrong side of history with this one. Wednesday, things were much simpler with another easy green bean side, and Friday there were scones!

Next week is sandwich number two of our Hot Sandwich series, I do a magic trick with Nutella, and on Friday, turn that magic trick into something delicious.

Recipes/posts released this week were:

Pop-culture Corner

The first wave of Captain America: Civil War screenings has started, and the minute I began to see early (good!) reactions in my Twitter feed, up went the Twitter and Chrome keyword blockers. I’m not usually a spoiler-phobe, but since I’ve read the comics and know what happens, I guess I really don’t want to know what happens.

The Rogue One teaser dropped. Whadja think? I’m a big fan of Felicity Jones and an even bigger fan of flowing capes, so for me, so far, so good.

Speaking of that Rogue One trailer, every time I peak outside of my perfectly curated Twitter bubble into the wider Twitterverse, the world feels like a completely garbage place.

Except for when I stumble upon tweets like this:

Are you ready for the Sherlock winter special? We all have the shows we love, possibly beyond reason. Sherlock is one of mine. The problem with loving this show is that it airs a three-episode season and then goes away for YEARS. The delight of loving it is that every time it comes back, it feels like an event. We aren’t even getting three episodes this time around, just a single 90-minute episode, but it’s Sherlock , so it’s cause for celebration.

We’re celebrating around here by making these Sherlock -themed tea bag cookies. The cookie base is my favorite crumbly, buttery shortbread, covered with melted chocolate and adorned with custom tea tags for a perfect Sherlock dessert. As a bonus, I have a fun extra recipe to use up the scraps so nothing goes to waste! (Scroll down to see!)

Glazed Jam Scones - 35

Ingredients

Cookies

  • ▢ 1 cup ( 8oz ) unsalted butter room temperature
  • ▢ 1/2 cup ( 60g ) powdered sugar sifted
  • ▢ 2 cups ( 280g ) all-purposflour
  • ▢ 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • ▢ 6-8 oz sweetened baking chocolate
  • ▢ Chocolate sprinkles for bonus recipe only

Tags

  • ▢ Thread or twine cut into 12-inch pieces
  • ▢ Double sided tape or glue stick
  • ▢ Printed tea tags downloads available above
  • ▢ Printed tea bag stencil optional

Instructions

Cookies

  • Cover two cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
  • Cream the butter and sugar. Stir in flour and salt, mixing until just combined. Be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of your bowl.
  • Dump dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap. Wrap and smash into a 1-inch thick disk. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Roll dough out on a piece of floured parchment paper, to 1/4 inch thick. Make sure to flour the top of the dough before rolling it out, so your rolling pin doesn’t stick.
  • Cut out rectangles of about 1.75 inches x 2.25 inches. A pizza cutter works great for this!
  • Using the stencil or eyeballing it, cut the two top corners off of each cookie, then use a straw to punch a hole in the cookie for the string.
  • Use a spatula to place cookies on a baking tray 1 inch apart. You can squish and re-roll the scraps to make more cookies, or you can save them and make the bonus recipe below.
  • Refrigerate the cut out dough for 15 minutes. This will help them keep their shape in the oven. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Bake the cookies for 7-9 minutes until lightly golden. If they have formed any air bubbles while baking, gently (and carefully) pat down while the cookies are still warm. Set aside to cool.
  • Once cookies have cooled, in the microwave, melt chocolate in a mug or other deep container. Start with 30 seconds, stir, and continue to microwave and stir in 15-second increments until melted.
  • Dust any stray crumbs from your first cookie and dip until chocolate covers about half of it. Continue with the remaining cookies. When your chocolate gets low, you can sweep the cookies back and forth in the chocolate to help scoop it up the sides of your cookies so that they look uniform. Place on parchment paper and allow to set.
  • Thread string and cut out tea tags. Using double-stick tape or a glue stick, fold and stick sides of paper together. Trim corners if desired. Serve and enjoy!

Glazed Jam Scones

Ingredients

Scones

  • 3 1/2 cups ( 420 g) all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons ( 38 g) sugar
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup ( 6 oz) cold unsalted butter cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • Jam of choice

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water

Glaze

  • 1 cup ( 120 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter melted
  • 1 to 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Scones

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F and cover a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In your food processor, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add butter and pulse until butter is cut into the flour mixture and no pieces larger than a pea remain.
  • Add buttermilk and continue to pulse until mixture begins to clump and forms a sticky dough.
  • Scrape dough onto a well-floured surface. Dust the top of the dough lightly with flour and pat down to about 3/4-inch thick. Using a 2 1/2-inch biscuit cutter or glass, cut out about 16 rounds, squishing the scraps together and re-flattening as needed.
  • Transfer scones to your baking tray. Use your thumbs to make a deep well in the tops, large enough for about half a tablespoon of jam. Fill with jam just to the top (if you overfill, the jam will run all over the scones).

Egg Wash

  • Whisk together egg and water and brush the scones with the egg wash. This will help give them a nice golden color.
  • Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, until lightly golden.

Glaze

  • In a small bowl, whisk powdered sugar, melted butter, 1 tablespoon of milk, vanilla, and salt together, and whisk until smooth. Add up to 2 more tablespoons of the milk, until glaze reaches your desired consistency, but be careful not to add too much, as the glaze won’t set if there is too much liquid. Brush or drizzle over scones.
